Title: Like Fire
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Bilbo/Thorin
Characters: Bilbo, Thorin, Fíli, Kíli

Disclaimer: "The Hobbit" belongs to J.R.R. Tolkien & Peter Jackson in their own respective ways. Nothing belongs to me.
Notes: Written as a fill for hobbitkink for the following prompt: "There are so many stories where Fili and Kili work out that Thorin likes Bilbo and try to drop not-so-subtle hints that Bilbo doesn't get, and they are excellent, but...What if Fili and Kili can't work out what's gotten into their uncle and enlist Bilbo to help them find out?" Beta'd by my best friend.

Like Fire

The king’s nephews were filled with something rather like resolve as they pushed the door open to the royal quarters, not giving a rabbit’s backside for what black mood was ahold of Thorin or why. If he doesn’t make amends, Dís had said when they’d sought her aid, you tell him he will have to answer to me. And I have far better things to do with my time than to babysit my fool brother, king or no. At the dark look on her face, the two brothers had felt caught between a rock and a hard place. They spent some time in the kitchens and finally gathered enough courage to do as their mother had bidden.

Fíli, with sharper hearing than his brother, detected the faint sounds of rustles and a thump from further in. He put out a hand to stop Kíli and reached for the blade he kept in a sheath on his hip. Kíli followed suit, one of his long daggers settled firmly into his palm, and at the sound of a sharp cry they both rushed to the end of the hallway and into Thorin’s bedroom, weapons poised, eyes sharp for danger, a battle-cry on their lips.

A moment later they fled back down the hallway, one after the other, amid Bilbo’s hysterical laughter and the crash of whatever treasure in Thorin’s reach he could find and throw after them.

“Why do you never knock?” Fíli heard before they shut the front door, breath labored and eyes wide as dinner plates.
